Enid Mary Blyton was born on 11 August, 1897. She was an English writer also known as Mary Pollock. Considered as one of the best children’s story writer during the 20th century, she’s known for writing series of books for different age groups. With over 600 million copies of her books sold, she is the fifth most translated author around the world with over 3544 translations done. Some of her famous works are Noddy, The Famous Five, Five-Find Outers and The Secret Seven. Almost all her work involves fantasy, adventure and sometimes magic.

Enid Blyton was born in Lordship Lane, East Dulwich, London on 11 August 1897. She was born to Theresa Mary Harrison and Carey Blyton who was a cutlery salesman. She had two younger brothers, Hanly and Carey. Blyton finished her schooling from St. Christopher’s School in Beckenham. She was a very talented pianist but apparently let go of her musical career when she began training to become a teacher.

In the year 1922, her first book Child Whispers was published which was a collection of poems. Enid Blyton got married to Hugh Alexander Pollock on 28 August 1924. Her husband was an editor for the publishing house George Newnes.

When the Second World War broke out, publishing of books was highly restricted. However, even with the restrictions she managed to get her books printed. She managed to publish 11 books in 1940 which included Tales of Betsy May, Twenty Minute Tales, and The Children of Cherry Farm. She also wrote the books, Three Boys and a Circus, and Children of Kidillin under her pet name Mary Pollock.

Her book Noddy Goes to Toyland came out in the year 1949. The story revolved around a boy named Noddy who had a knack for trouble and was usually rescued by his toyland friends. The character of Noddy became so famous that it became a household name. However, with the success of Noddy, criticism followed. But all this was short lived because of her ability to encourage children to read. Her work also included writing for the Enid Blyton’s Magazine but she had to stop writing it by the year 1959 in order to concentrate on her writings.

Her books often reveal the fantasies which children have. Her book The Famous Five was written from 1942 till 1963 and it consisted of 21 novels. The story was based on four children and their dog and the series of adventures they embarked. The Five Find-Outers and dog consisted of 15 novels and it was written from 1943 to 1961. Another of these kinds of novels was Secret Seven which was written from 1949 till 1963. It also consisted of 15 novels.

Enid Blyton died on 28 November, 1968, in Hampstead, London, England. Blyton’s life story was made into a BBC film in the year 2009 which starred Helena Bonham Carter. The film was aired on 16 November 2009 on BBC in England. It is estimated that more than a million copies of Famous Five books are sold every year and her books have been translated into more than 90 languages. She was voted the best-loved author in the year 2008 by Costa Book Awards, ahead of JK Rowling and Roald Dahl.
