Elizabeth M. Gilbert says: “A true soul mate is probably the most important person you\'ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.”

Gilbert is an American author and her best-known work is Eat, Pray, Love. The novel as of December 2010 stayed for 199 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. A movie is also made out of it.

Gilbert was born in Connecticut and grew up with her only sister Catherine Gilbert Murdock – a novelist and historian.  Gilbert earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from New York University in 1991 and thereafter she worked as a waitress, a cook, and as a magazine employee. Her experience as a cook is scripted in her book - The Last American Man.

In 1993, Esquire published Gilbert\'s short story "Pilgrims" under the headline - "The Debut of an American Writer". After that she started working as a journalist with a variety of magazines, such as The New York Times Magazine, Allure, Real Simple, GQ, SPIN, and Travel + Leisure. She made a career as a freelance writer in the ‘highly-paid’ bracket.

The Last American Man was nominated for National Book Award, Pilgrims received the Pushcart Prize and was the finalist for PEN/Hemingway Award.  In 2006, Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman\'s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia was published. She financed her travel around the world with an advance from the publisher (Viking). Her fifth one - Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage – was launched by Viking in 2010. This book is kind of a sequel to Eat, Pray, Love.
