Theodor Seuss Geisel popularly called Dr. Seuss was born in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. His parents were Theodor Robert and Henrietta (Seuss) Geisel and they were of German descent. He wrote under the pseudonyms of Dr. Seuss, Theo LeSieg, and Rosetta Stone. His father ran the family brewery that was shut down during Prohibition. He studied at Dartmouth College and he became part of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern. He went to study a PhD in English Literature at Lincoln College, Oxford. There he met popular children’s author Helen Palmer and they married. He was versatile: Writer, cartoonist, animator, book publisher, and artist.

During the Depression, Geisel worked on advertisements for General Electric, The National Broadcasting Company (NBC), Standard Oil, and other organizations. During the Second World War, he wrote three children’s books and he also created political cartoons. He condemned the actions of Hitler and Mussolini and his condemnation was reflected in Dr. Seuss Goes to War. He also condemned the treatment towards the Blacks and the Jews in the U.S. He supported President Roosevelt in the measures that he took during the war. Later he moved to California with his wife and wrote If I Ran the Zoo, Horton Hears A Who!, If I Ran the Circus, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Green Eggs and Ham.

Geisel died in 1991 succumbing to throat cancer.
