Carol Shields was an American-born Canadian writer. Some of her writings are Small Ceremonies, The Box Garden, Happenstance, A Fairly Conventional Woman, Swann: A Mystery, A Celibate Season, The Republic of Love, The Stone Diaries, Larry’s Party, Unless, Words, Various Miracles, The Orange Fish, Dressing up for the Carnival, Collected Stories, Departures and Arrivals, Thirteen Hands, Fashion Power Guilt and the Charity of Families, Anniversary: A Comedy, Women Waiting, Susanna Moodie: Voice and Vision, Jane Austen (biography), Dropped Threads: What We aren\'t Told, and Dropped Threads 2: More of What We aren\'t Told. She was born in Oak Park in Illinois. She attended Hanover College, Indiana; the University of Exeter, England; and the University of Ottawa, Canada where she received an M.A.
Carol Shields moved to Canada where she worked for the Canadian Slavonic Papers journal. Later she taught at the University of Ottawa. She moved to Manitoba in Canada with her husband. She wrote her most popular works here and taught at the University of Manitoba. Later she became Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg. She died in 2003.
