Carlos Fuentes Biography and latest books by Carlos Fuentes

Carlos Fuentes was one of the most famous writers from Latin America. He was born in 1928 in Panama City to a Mexican diplomat. He lived and traveled with his parents across Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Washington, Santiago, Quito, and Buenos Aires. He went to live in Mexico when he was 16 years old. He became a diplomat and worked as an ambassador in the U.K. and France. He taught at several universities.  He was a recipient of several awards such as Four Freedoms Award for Freedom of Speech and Expression, Mazatlán Literature Prize, Xavier Villaurrutia Award, Rómulo Gallegos Prize, Alfonso Reyes International Prize, Mexican National Prize for Arts and Sciences, Legion of Honour, Premio Grizane Cavour, Prince of Asturias Awards, Unesco\'s Picasso Medal, Prize of the Real Academia Española, Great Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, and the Cervantes Prize.

Fuentes’ first book was Where the Air is clear. He authored La Región Más Transparente (The Most Transparent Region), Las Buenas Conciencias (The Good Conscience), Aura, La muerte de Artemio Cruz (The Death of Artemio Cruz), Cambio de piel (A Change of Skin), El naranjo (The Orange Tree), Cristóbal Nonato (Christopher Unborn), La cabeza de la hidra (The Hydra Head), Agua quemada (Burnt Water), Una familia lejana (Distant Relations), and Gringo viejo (The Old Gringo). Some of his famous essays are La nueva novela hispanoamericana, El mundo de José Luis Cuevas, Los 68, Contra Bush, En esto creo, Los cinco soles de México: memoria de un milenio, Retratos en el tiempo, with Carlos Fuentes Lemus, Nuevo tiempo mexicano (A New Time for Mexico), Tres discursos para dos aldeas, Geografía de la novella, and El Espejo Enterrado. He wrote several screen plays such as Pedro Páramo, Los caifanes, Un alma pura, Tiempo de morir (co-authored with Gabriel García Márquez), Las dos Elenas, and El gallo de oro (co-authored with Gabriel García Márquez and Roberto Gavaldón.
