A recipient of the UN Medal, Ashok Kumar was born in the village of ‘Kurana’ of district Panipat in Haryana. After completing his primary education from the village Government school Ashok went on to do B. Tech. and M. Tech. from IIT Delhi. He was awarded with the best writer of the year award in 1986-87 at IIT-Delhi. He is an avid reader of Hindi, English, Bangla and Russian literature. However, after realizing that his real interest was in serving people, he decided to join the Indian Police Service (IPS).
Kumar joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in the year 1989. Until recently he served in the capacity of Inspector General of Police (IGP), Garwhal and IGP Kumaon. He is presently on deputation with the Central Reserve Police Force in Delhi. He took up many challenging assignments in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and received the UN Medal for serving in strife torn Kosovo in the year 2001. Kumar was honoured with the Indian Police Medal in the year 2006 by the President of India for his long and meritorious services to the Indian Police Force. His other interests include playing Badminton, Tennis, Riding and organizing sports events.
