Amitav Ghosh is a world renowned Indian author and novelist known for his works in the English language. His writings often show an amalgamation of cultures expressed through the use of various languages. Like many subaltern authors, he expresses the silenced voices of those that were not represented in the historical world.
He has received numerous awards for his works, some of which include, Prix Médicis étranger award for The Circle of Reason, The Sahitya Akademy Award for The Shadow Lines, Arthur C. Clarke Prize for science factor for The Calcutta Chromosome, and The Grand Prize for Fiction at the Frankfurt International e-Book Awards for The Glass Palace.

Amitav Ghosh was born on 11 July, 1956, in Kolkata, India. He finished his early schooling from The Doon School and then went on to study at St. Stephen’s College, in Delhi under Delhi University. He then went on to St. Edmund Hall, Oxford and got his D. Phil. in Social Anthropology. He got married to Deborah Baker and was blessed with two children, Lila and Nayan. In the year 1999, he joined as a faculty at Queens College, City University of New York as a distinguished professor in Comparative Literature.

Some of his other notable works include - The Shadow Lines (1990), In An Antique Land (1994), The Circle of Reason (1986), The Calcutta Chromosome (1995), and The Glass Palace (2000), The Hungry Tide (2004). He also has written 3 non-fictional works which are The Countdown, The Imam and The Indian.
Sea of Poppies, which was released in 2008, was his latest works. The book is an epic saga which was set before the Opium war. It also captures the time of the colonial history of the East. His work in the Shadow Lines was highly appreciated by critics and it won the Sahitya Akademi Award which is India’s most prestigious literary award. Most of his writings are very unique and personal. In the year 2007 he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.

Currently he lives in New York with his wife Deborah Barker.
