Amelia Mary Earhart was a famous American pilot and author. She was the first aviatrix to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Her writings include 20 Hrs. 40 Min.: Our Flight in the Friendship, The Fun of It, and Last Flight. She wrote as an aviation editor for the Cosmopolitan magazine. Some of her remarkable achievements were: set the Women\'s world altitude record at 14,000 ft in 1922, first woman to fly the Atlantic in 1928, first woman to fly an autogyro in 1931, first person to cross the U.S. in an autogyro in 1932, first woman to fly the Atlantic solo in 1932, first person to fly the Atlantic twice in 1932, first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1932, first woman to fly nonstop, coast-to-coast across the U.S. in 1933, set the Women\'s speed transcontinental record in 1933, first person to fly solo between Honolulu, Hawaii and Oakland, California in 1935, first person to fly solo from Los Angeles, California to Mexico City, Mexico in 1935, first person to fly solo nonstop from Mexico City, Mexico to Newark, New Jersey in 1935,and set the speed record for east-to-west flight from Oakland, California to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1937.

Amelia Earhart was born on July 24 in 1897 at Atchison, Kansas, U.S. She grew up in Des Moines and was home schooled for a while. She was very fond of reading as a child. She attended Hyde Park High School and Ogontz School. She worked with the Volunteer Aid Detachment at Spadina Military Hospital. Later she enrolled at the Columbia University and dropped out. She went for flying lessons to Kinner Field near Long Beach. She bought a Kinner Airster biplane and she nicknamed it ‘The Canary’. She flew The Canary to an altitude of 14,000 feet (4,300 m), setting a world record for female pilots. She became the 16th woman to be issued a pilot\'s license.

Amelia Earhart disappeared in 1937 with Fred Noonan in the Pacific Ocean during their World Flight in the Lockheed Electra 10E that she had purchased with funds donated by Purdue University.
