Biography of Shabana Azmi :
Shabana Azmi is an Indian film actress who has acted in mainstream as well as parallel cinema. She is also a social activist. Alumni of the Film and Television Institute of India, Shabana Azmi made her acting debut with the National Award winning art film, Ankur. Her main focus in acting was on contemporary films and she was seen in many meaningful films like Arth, Khandhar, Paar etc. Her appearance in Godmother (1999) too won her much critical acclaim. She can also be seen in Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi.
She appeared in international films like Deepa Mehta's Fire, Madame Sousatzka and City of Joy. In mainstream cinema, she appeared in Amar Akbar Anthony, Parvarish and Jwalamukhi among others. She is married to noted Indian poet, lyricist Javed Akhtar. As a committed social activist, Shabana has been active in fighting AIDS and injustice. She also denounces communalism and has voiced her opinion on many issues. She is also the goodwill ambassador for UN's Population Fund. She has won 5 National Awards, 4 Filmfare Awards, 4 International Awards, and many other honorary awards. She has also been honored with Rajiv Gandhi Award and Padma Sri.
