Yvonne Vera was a short-story writer and novelist from Zimbabwe. Her writings include Why Don\'t You Carve Other Animals, Nehanda, Without a Name, Under the Tongue, Butterfly Burning, and The Stone Virgins. She was born in 1964 in Bulawayo in former Southern Rhodesia (modern-day Zimbabwe). She attended York University in Toronto in Canada where she completed a BA, a Masters, and PhD. She also taught at York University. She returned to Zimbabwe and worked as director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo which showcases local talent.
Yvonne Vera died in 2005 of AIDS-related meningitis.
