Waris Shah was born in 1722 in Jandiala Sher Khan, Punjab. Waris Shah\'s parents are said to have died when he was young, and he probably received education at the shrine of his teacher. After completing his education in Kasur, he moved to Malka Hans, a village near Pakpattan. He lived in a small room, adjacent to the historic mosque, now known as Masjid Waris Shah. Waris Shah is popularly called the Shakespeare of the Punjabi language, owing to poetic love story—Heer Ranjha. Some critics’ say that the romantic love, he tried to depict the great love of man for God, which is the essence of Sufism. His verse is a treasure-trove of many Punjabi quotes, idioms and sayings. Many verses of Waris Shah are widely used in Punjab in a moral context.
