Vishnu Prabhakar was born in 1912 at Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh. He was a famous short storywriter, novelist, travel writer, and a playwright in the Hindi literary world. He was vocal about patriotism and social reform and his thoughts are echoed in his writings. He studied at Hisar where he completed his matriculation. He was interested in Literature and completed a B.A in Literature. He wrote and published his first story, Diwali in the Hindi Milap. His wife, Sushila Prabhakar was a major source of inspiration. He was also inspired by Munshi Premchand and Sharatchandra. He was the recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan Award, and the Sahitya Akademi Award

Vishnu Prabhakar wrote novels such as Dhalti Raat, Nishikant, Tat Ke Bandhan, Swapnmayi, Darpan Ka Vyakti, Parchhai, Koi To, and Ardhnarishwar. His short story collections include Ek Kahani Ka Janam, Aadi Aur Ant, Rehman Ka Beta, Zindagi Ke Thapede, Sangharsh Ke Baad, Dharti Ab Bhi Ghoom Rahi Ha, Safar Ke Saathi, Khandit Pooja, Sanche Aur Kala, Meri Tentis Kahaniya, Meri Priya Kahaniya, Pul Tootne Se Pehle, Mera Watan, Meri Lokpriya Kahaniya, Khilone, Aapki Kripa, Meri Kahaniya, Meri Kathayatra, Ek Aur Kunti, and Zindagi Ek Rehearsal. His most famous poetry collection is Chalta Chala Jaonga. Some of his renowned plays are Naprabhat, Yuge-Yuge Kranti, Kuhaasa Aur Kiran, Tagar, Bandini, Satta Ke Aar-Paar, Ab Aur Nahin, Shwet Kamal, Keral Ka Krantikari, and Vishnu Prabhkar : Sampurna Natak. Some of his books for children are Mote Lal, Kunti Ke Bete, Ramu Ki Holi, Dada Ki Kachehari, Jab Didi Bhoot Bani, Jeevan Parag, Bankimchandra, Abhinav Ekanki, and Swaraj Ki Kahani.
