Vidya Niwas Mishra was an author, editor, and translator. He was born in 1926 at Pakardiha in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He studied at Gorakhpur University and Allahabad University. He completed a Masters degree in Sanskrit. He also worked on the compilation of the Hindi dictionary under the guidance of renowned scholar, Rahul Sankrityayan. He was proficient at Sanskrit, Hindi, and English. He wrote more than a hundred books in both Hindi and English. He taught at the University of California and the University of Washington. He also taught at Kashi Vidyapeeth and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University. He won the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Moortidevi Prize. He worked on the Encyclopedia of Hinduism and was a Rajya Sabha Member. Some of the books he authored are Antaranga, Phaguna Dui Re Dina, Mahabharata Ka Kayartha, Ramayana Ka Kavyamarma, Sephali Jhara Rahi Hai, and Hindi Aura Hama.
