Verghese Kurien was an Indian engineer and a social entrepreneur remembered as the Father of the White Revolution, (Operation Flood—the world\'s largest dairy development program). This became India’s largest self-sustainable rural employment programme. Kurien has written two books:I Too Had a Dream and An Unfinished Dream. His memoirs are profoundly inspiring, and help us comprehend his multifaceted personality and the magnitude of his contributions.
Kurien was responsible for the creation and success of the Amul dairy products. A major accomplishment at Amul was the invention of milk powder from buffalo milk (abundant in India), as opposed to that made from cow-milk.
Kurien has been awarded Padma Vibhushan, the World Food Prize and the Magsaysay Award.
Verghese Kurien was born on at Calicut, Madras Presidency, British India into a Syrian Christian community. His father was a civil surgeon. He died after a brief spell of illness in Gujarat, India. He was 90. He is survived by his wife, one daughter Nirmala Kurien and a grandson, Siddharth.
