Shardha Ram was born in 1837 in the town of Phillaur, Jalandhar in Punjab. Shardha Ram did not have a formal education but learnt the Gurmukhi script at home by the age of seven. By the age of ten years, he had studied Hindi, Sanskrit, Persian, astrology, and music. His writing work has recently been acknowledged. His novel Bhagyawati is believed to have been written in Amritsar and published in 1888, after his death. The novel\'s portrayal of women and women\'s rights was a progressive thought back in the day. There are some records of a written volume of 1400 pages considered to have been lost. Some of his popular work includes Sikhan De Raj Di Vithia, Punjabi Batcheet, Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Bhagyawati, Satya Dharm Muktavli, Shatopadesh and Satya Amrit Pravaha.
