Shanta Gokhale is an Indian writer, theatre critic, translator and bilingual columnist. She has written Rita Welingkar. As a translator she has worked on veteran actress Durga Khote\'s autobiography and several plays by Mahesh Elkunchwar and Satish Alekar.
Her first novel Rita Welinkar, was written originally in Marathi. The book has been translated into English and released with the same title. Her play Avinash has been performed in Marathi, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and Assamese.
Gokhale’s family moved to Shivaji Park from Dahanu when her father took up a job in a newspaper, Searchlight. She studied from Bombay Scottish School, Mahim. She left for England at the age of 15 where she studied BA (Hons) in English literature from Bristol University.
She returned to India when she was 21 and she did her M. A. (Hons) degree in English literature from Mumbai University. She also studied Communications and Video Production from Xavier\'s Institute of Communication.
Gokhale started publishing stories in 1970s. She has also written the screenplay for several films and documentaries. Haathi Ka Anda and Ardh Satya are some of the Hindi films she has been associated with.
