Ruth Rendell the queen of macabre crime and subtle insanity was born in London. She studied in County High School for Girls in Loughton, Essex. Her parents were teachers and of English, Dane, and Swedish origin. She initially worked as a journalist for the Essex Newspapers. She was fired from her job after writing an article on the local tennis club’s dinner that she did not attend and therefore missed out on covering the untimely death of the after-dinner speaker’s halfway speech.

Ruth Rendell has drawn a paradigm in the whodunit genre. She writes about characters from London who appear regular, yet they are on the brink of schizophrenia, dementia, insanity, pedophilia, and so on. In the 1980s, she wrote books under the pseudonym of Barbara Vine which were a major success. She is popular for her sophisticated prose and subtle narration. She has been credited for being able to effortlessly decipher the human mind with all its quirks and sickness.
