Robert Louis Stevenson was Scotland-based novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer par excellence. His works, like Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde made him one of the most celebrated and respected authors. Stevenson’s works even rank among the 26 most translated authors in the world.


While Stevenson was growing up Stevenson dared to go against what his father willed. He decided to go against pursuing his family business (designing and building lighthouses) and went about studying law instead.

While in school, he realized that he was meant to be a writer, he started writing travel essays and books. After he finished school, thought against practicing law. Due to his health problems he never stayed in Scotland but his love for Scottish history and culture, never died and was constantly used liberally in his works of fiction.


The idea for his book Treasure Island came on his visit to Scotland, while drawing a treasure map with his 12-year-old stepson. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, was published three years later, and became a best-seller. Kidnapped came out the same year and his career as a writer was established. Stevenson then wrote many fascinating stories about the South Seas, as well as nonfictional travel stories. Having fought for good health all his life, he died of a sudden stroke in December 1894.


This duality is the hallmark of Stevenson\'s body of work - expressed clearly in Jekyll and Hyde, but written about in Kidnapped and The Master of Ballantrae. Stevenson understood that both people and cultures have a dual nature, battling between good and evil, the pull of the past and the push to the future, a complexity that plays out in our lives on many levels. In Kidnapped, the two protagonists are a lowland Scot and a swashbuckling Highlander and the interplay of their characters is the focal point of the story - a clash between the "two Scotlands". In The Master of Ballantrae, the two brothers, good and evil, are yet but two sides of the same coin struggling for supremacy. Set during the Jacobite risings, this story also contrasts the dual nature of Scotland\'s heritage.
