Robert Capa was born on October 22, 1913, in Budapest in Hungary. He was named Endre Friedmann by his parents. He wanted to be a writer and left Hungary when he was 18. He began to work as a photographer in Berlin. However he had to flee Berlin to France due to the rise of Hitler.
Capa was a combat photographer and photojournalist who covered five different wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. He authored Death in the Making, The Battle of Waterloo Road, Invasion!, Slightly Out of Focus, A Russian Journal, Report on Israel (co-authored with Irwin Shaw), Heart of Spain, Blood and Champagne: The Life and Times of Robert Capa, and La foto de Capa. He died in Indo-China when he stepped on a landmine on May 25, 1954. He died on his way to a hospital.
