Rajinder Singh Bedi was a noteworthy, progressive Urdu writer, playwright, Hindi film director, and a dialogue writer.
Some of his celebrated work as a dialogue writer can be seen in films, like Abhimaan, and Madhumati. As a director he is most known for his films Dastak and Phagun.
Rajinder Singh Bedi is regarded as one of the progressive writers of Urdu fiction who contributed to literature in the 20th century. Like Saadat Hasan Manto, he is known for his haunting tales of the partition of India.
Rajinder Singh Bedi was born near Sialkot (now in Pakistan). He grew up in Lahore, where he studied Urdu. After the partition his family members chose to settle in Fazilka, in the Indian side of Punjab.
His writing was known particularly admired for its sensitivity and earthiness. His classic novella Ek Chadar Maili Si was adapted into a film in Pakistan, Mutthi Bhar Chawal (1978) and then in India, as Ek Chadar Maili Si (1986). This is a rare phenomenon where an Indian author has his work picturised in India and Pakistan.
