Pupul Jayakar was an Indian writer and cultural activist. Pupul Jayakar was born in 1915 in Etawah in the United Provinces (Uttar Pradesh). Her father was a bureaucrat with the Indian Civil Service. She attended Bedford College and London School of Economics. She got married to an Indian barrister, Manmohan Jayakar and settled down in Bombay (Mumbai). Jawaharlal Nehru encouraged her to study the handloom sector of India. She founded the National Institute of Fashion (NIFT) in New Delhi, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), National Crafts Museums, and co-founded Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). She served as chair of the All-India Handloom Board and Handicrafts and Handlooms Export Corporation. She was instrumental in the revival of the Madhubani painting and in the running of the elite Rishi Valley School. She also started ‘Toy Cart’ a magazine for children.
