Maurice Bernard Sendak was an American writer cum illustrator of children\'s books. His best work is Where the Wild Things Are was published in 1963.
Sendak was born to Polish Jewish parents. Sendak once called his childhood as a "terrible situation" because of his extended family died in The Holocaust. This exposed him to death very early in life. His love of books began at an early age when he was confined to his bed due to health problems. He decided to become an illustrator after watching Walt Disney\'s film Fantasia at the age of twelve.
Sendak deeply admired Herman Melville and Emily Dickinson.
Sendak was an atheist who had once said, "It (religion, and belief in God) must have made life much easier (for some religious friends of his). It\'s harder for us nonbelievers."
