Matthew Restall is an ethnohistorian, Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Latin American History, Anthropology, and Women\'s Studies, Director of Latin American Studies, and Director of LiLACS at the Pennsylvania State University, and a writer. Some of his books include The Maya World: Yucatec Culture and Society, Maya Conquistador, The Riddle of Latin America, 2012 and the End of the World: The Western Roots of the Maya Apocalypse, The Black Middle: Africans, Mayas, and Spaniards in Colonial Yucatan, and Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest. He also serves as co-editor of Ethnohistory journal, and series editor of Latin American Originals.

Restall was born in London. He was raised in Spain, Venezuela, and South-East Asia. He received a BA in Modern History from Oxford University and a PhD in Latin American History from UCLA.
