Margaret Mead was an American cultural anthropologist, writer and speaker. Her works include Coming of Age in Samoa, Growing up in New Guinea, The Changing Culture of an Indian Tribe, Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies, And Keep Your Powder Dry: An Anthropologist Looks at America, Male and Female, New Lives for Old: Cultural Transformation in Manus, People and Places, Continuities in Cultural Evolution, Culture and Commitment, and Blackberry Winter: My Earlier Years. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and grew up in Doylestown in Pennsylvania. Her father, Edward Sherwood Mead, was a professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Her mother, Emily Mead was a sociologist.

Margaret Mead attended DePauw University, Barnard College and Columbia University. After receiving her master’s degree, she went to Samoa for field work. She returned to work as an assistant curator with the American Museum of Natural History, New York City. She taught at The New School, Columbia University and Division of Social Sciences at Fordham University\'s Lincoln Center. She was president of the American Anthropological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She was a famous participant at the UN Habitat I. She was also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She died in 1978.

Mead was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
