Margaret Drabble was born in Sheffield in England. Her father was the advocate and writer John F. Drabble and her mother Kathleen Marie was a teacher. Her older sister is the famous writer Dame Antonia Byatt and her younger sister is the famous art historian Helen Langdon. She attended Newnham College, Cambridge where she studied English.

Margaret Drabble is married to writer Sir Michael Holroyd and she is sister to novelist AS Byatt. One of her sons is the famous British political philosopher and sociologist Adam Swift.
