Manohar Shyam Joshi was synonymous with early and widely-popular Hindi television soaps such as Hum Log and Buniyaad. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Kyap. He was born in 1933 in Ajmer in Rajasthan. He worked as a journalist, writer, and scriptwriter. He is referred to as the ‘Father of Indian Soap Operas’. He also wrote the television scripts of Mungeri Lal Ke Hasin Sapney, Kakaji Kahin, Hamrahi, Zameen Aasman, and Gatha. Some of his most popular literary works are Kasap, Netaji Kahin, Kuru Kuru Swaahaa, Hariya Hercules Ki Hairani, Prabhu Tum Kaise Kissago, Mandir Ghaat ki Pauriyaan, Uss Desh Ka Yaron Kya Kahna, Baton Baton Mein, Kaise Kissago, Ek Durlabh Vyaktitva, Lucknow Mera Lucknow, Gatha Kurukshetra Ki,Seemaant Diary - Kashmir Se Kachh Tak, Kyaap, Hamzad, Vadhasthal, and Kapeeshji. He died in 2006 in New Delhi.
