Kankana Basu Biography and latest books by Kankana Basu

Kankana Basu is a writer who has come out with a novel Cappuccino Dusk, and a book of 13 interconnected short stories titled Vinegar Sunday. Cappuccino Dusk has been long listed for the 2007 Man Asian Literary Prize and published by HarperCollins, India. Along with writing, Kankana Basu also illustrates children’s fiction. When she is free she prefers to assist in translating the works of her grandfather, the late Bengali author Saradindu Bandopadhyay.

In an interview to a reputed newspaper Kankana Basu, mentioned how her debut work of fiction came about. “My debut book Vinegar Sunday, was written under extreme family pressure and mainly with the intention of getting nagging relatives off my back. But by the end of the book I found I had succumbed hook, line and sinker to the magic of writing fiction!” says Kankana Basu.

She also stated that she wrote her first work when she sailed out with her marine engineer husband. She feels that the silence, solitude and space that sailing granted her contributed to the completion of her book. However, she quickly added that it is ironic that the very activities that rob her of writing time are the things that fuel her fiction writing.

She has completed working on her third book The Messiah and is looking for a publisher for it along with writing the first draft of her fourth novel Secret of the Zamindar\'s Cuisine.

Along with writing fiction, Kankana contributes regularly to many publications and journals. She contributes articles for The Sunday Hindu. The pieces she writes for newspapers and journals generally speak about grave social and educational issues, lifestyle features, in–depth analytical essays and book reviews.
