Kamleshwar was a prominent writer in Hindi. He was also a screen writer and he wrote the scripts of popular Hindi movies such as Aandhi, Mausam, Chhoti Si Baat and Rang Birangi. His writings earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan.
Kamleshwar was born in the Mainpuri District of Uttar Pradesh. His first story, Comrade was published in 1948. He studied literature in Allahabad University when he wrote his first novel, Badnam Gali. Later he went on to write for Hindi newspapers such as Dainik Jagaran and Dainik Bhaskar. He wrote over a hundred short stories. Some of his prominent writings are Not Flowers of Henna, Kitne Pakistan, Aagami Atit, Aazadi Mubarak, Amma, Anbita Vyatit, Ankho Dekha Pakistan, Hindustan Hamara, Katha Prasthan, Mati Ho Gai Sona, and Mehfil.
