Winsome Ruth Key Godden was born in 1906 in Assam and she wrote under the pseudonym of Jon Godden. Her writings include The Bird Escaped, The House by the Sea, The Peacock, The City and the Wave, The Seven Islands, Mrs. Panopoulis, Winter’s Tale (Tale in Winter), In the Sun, Mrs. Starr Lives Alone (published as Kitten with Blue Eyes too), Ahmed and the Old Lady (published as Ahmed’s Lady too), and In Her Garden. She also wrote books with her sister, Rumer Godgen which are Two under the Indian Sun, Gone: A Thread of Stories, Shiva’s Pigeons, Indian Dust, and Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love: Stories.
Jon Godden grew up in India. She went to a series of boarding schools in England. She returned to India and married Nigel Baughan, an employee of Imperial Tobacco. His death devastated her and she went to live with her parents in England. However she returned to India and stayed there until independence. She died in 1984.
