Jilly Cooper was born as Jilly Sallitt at Hornchurch, Essex, England. She attended Moorfield School in Ilkley and the Godolphin School in Salisbury. She grew up in Ilkley and Surrey. She started her career as a journalist. She married Leo Cooper, a publisher of military history books. She currently lives in Bisley, near Stroud in Gloucestershire.
