JB Bury (John Bagnell Bury) was an Irish historian, writer, classical scholar, Byzantinist, and philologist. His most famous writings include Nemean Odes of Pindar, Isthmian Odes of Pindar, History of the Later Roman Empire from Arcadius to Irene, History of the Roman Empire From its Foundation to the Death of Marcus Aurelius, History of Greece to the Death of Alexander the Great, Life of St. Patrick and His Place in History, History of the Eastern Empire from the Fall of Irene to the Accession of Basil I, History of the Freedom of Thought, Idea of Progress, History of the Later Roman Empire from the Death of Theodosius I to the Death of Justinian, The Invasion of Europe by the Barbarians, History of the Papacy in the 19th Century (1864–1878), and The ancient Greek Historians.

JB Bury was born and raised in Clontibret, County Monaghan, Ireland. He attended Foyle College in Derry and Trinity College in Dublin. He worked at Trinity College and Cambridge University. He was Steven Runciman’s mentor.
