Joanne Rowling (J K Rowling) was born near Bristol in Yate – in the South of the town called Dursley (this name has appeared in the first book Philosopher’s Stone, Harry’s muggle cousin). Her dad - Peter Rowling met her mom Anne aboard a train when it left King’s Cross Station – the station also repeats in Potter series. Then when Joanne’s family shifted to the village of Winterbourne, Jo and her sister became friends with neighborhood kids Vikki and Ian Potter. Joanne later admitted that while being stuck in a delayed train for hours she just thought of this imaginary character – Harry Potter.

Joanne, after completion of Harry Potter – the first book – sent it to two agents. One of them Christopher Little was mesmerized by it and put in all his efforts to get it published. Though it was a long time before it got published by Bloomsbury in 1996, then on it was a cakewalk for her.

Joanne has graduated from Exeter University, she worked as French and English teacher. The publisher asked her for the first publication to use initials instead of her full name as that might not attract boys who would be less interested to read books written by a girl. She has used her initial ‘J’ and ‘K’ is taken from her favorite grand-mom Kathleen.

She was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2000. Philosopher’s Stone was made into a movie in 2002 and Potter stories are now being translated in more than 200 languages. Harry Potter series completes with seven books and all were made into movies, with the last one split into two.

Joanne is a huge fan of the rock band – The Smiths and of Monty Python. One of her favourite movies is The Fabulous Baker Boys written and directed by Steve Kloves – Harry Potter’s screenplay writer.
