Ellena Garo was born in 1920 in Puebla in Mexico. Her father was Spanish and her mother was Mexican. She lived in Mexico City, Iguala de la Independencia, and Cuernavaca. She attended the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City and studied literature, choreography, and theater. She strongly felt on issues such as the marginalization of women and racism and her writings were based on them.
Garo married Octavio Paz and later they divorced. They had a daughter together. After the divorce she lived in Cuernavaca with her daughter and thirteen cats. She died suffering from lung cancer.
