Brigid Antonia Brophy or Lady Levey was born in 1929 in London. She attended The Abbey School, St. Paul’s Girls’ School, and then Oxford. She was a feminist and she was known for her views on the Vietnam War, marriage, religious education in educational establishments, sex, and pornography.
She was married to Sir Michael Levey. She was known for her animal rights campaigns and her promotion of vegetarianism. Dianna Marr-Johnson regarded her as one of her dearest friends. She authored Black Ship to Hell, Mozart the Dramatist: A New View of Mozart, His Operas and His Age, Don\'t Never Forget: Collected Views and Reviews, Religious Education in State Schools, Black and White: A Portrait of Aubrey Beardsley, The Rights of Animals, Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection Society, The Longford Threat to Freedom, National Secular Society, Prancing Novelist: A Defence of Fiction in the Form of a Critical Biography in Praise of Ronald Firbank, Beardsley and His World, The Prince and the Wild Geese, A Guide to Public Lending Right, and Baroque \'n\' Roll and Other Essays. She also wrote fiction that includes The Crown Princess and Other Stories, Hackenfeller\'s Ape, The King of a Rainy Country, The Finishing Touch, The Burglar, Palace without Chairs: A Baroque Novel, and The Adventures of God in His Search for the Black Girl: A Novel and Some Fables among many other writings. She died in 1995.
