William Francis Deedes, Baron Deedes, who was popularly known as Bill Deedes was born on June 1, 1913 at Saltwood Castle in England. He attended the elite Harrow School. However, he could not make it to university as a result of his father’s financial losses at the Wall Street Crash of 1929. He began his career as a journalist for the Morning Post and then the Daily Telegraph. He fought in the Second World War as an officer in the 2nd Battalion of The Queen\'s Westminsters, one of the territorial units of the King\'s Royal Rifle Corps.
Bill Deedes was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashford in 1950. He was a Minister in British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan\'s Cabinet in 1962. He went on to become the Minister of Information. He was a versatile professional. He reported on the Second Italo-Abyssinian War along with Evelyn Waugh. He authored Words and Deedes: Selected Journalism, At War with Waugh: The Real Story of "Scoop", Brief Lives, Macmillan, and Dear Bill: A Memoir.
