Bill Bryson was born in Des Moines, Iowa. His book, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is an account of his life in Des Moines. This book is known for its humor. He went to Drake University; however he dropped out and went backpacking across Europe. Parts of this journey have been described in Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe. He traveled to the UK in 1973 and during his sojourn he worked in the Holloway Sanatorium in Virginia Water, Surrey. He met his wife Cynthia and traveled back to the US to earn a university degree. They returned to England where he worked as a journalist for The Times and The Independent. Currently, he lives with his wife and four children in Norfolk.
