Banarasidas was born in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh in the year 1586. He spent his childhood in Jaunpur and shifted to Agra later. Banarasidas was one of the leading proponents of the Adyatma movement. He is best known for his poetic autobiography - ArdhakathÄnaka, (The Half Story) written in Braj Bhasa, which is an early dialect of Hindi, popularly spoken in Mathura. Some of his major works include Moha Vivek Yuddha, BanÄrasi NÄmamÄla (1613) BanÄrasivilÄsa (1644), SamayasÄra NÄtaka (1636) and Ardhakathanaka (1641) all written in Braj Bhasha. The English translation, "Ardhakathanak: a half story" has been published by Penguin Classics in 2010.
