Popularly known as Pash, Avtar Singh Sandhu was born on September 9, 1950 at Talwandi Salem, Jalandhar, in Punjab. A Punjabi poet with an edge, his left-wing views often reflected in his poetry. His first book of revolutionary poems Loh-Katha (The Iron Tale) was published in 1970. His militant and provocative tone in the book inflated the rage of the system, and he was jailed on murder charge. On acquittal, he started editing a literary magazine called Siarh (The Plow Line) and was awarded a fellowship at the Punjabi Academy of Letters in 1985. Some of his literary work includes Uddian Bazan Magar (Following The Flying Hawks) (1973), Saadey Samiyaan Vich (In Our Times) (1978), and Khilre Hoey Varkey (Scattered pages) (1989)
