Anais Nin was a French-Cuban author, scandalously famous for her erotic writings and her intimacy with the equally controversial American writer Henry Miller. Based in Paris, and later, in the USA, Nin is famous for her published journals, spanning six decades, staring from the 11th year of her life.
Born to artistic parents in France, Nin grew up in Europe. After the parents separated, Nin moved with her two brothers to Barcelona and then to New York City. At 16, Nin left school and started to work as a model for an artist. Married twice, Nin led an adventurous life, her reputation as a diarist has only grown over the years. Critics have also called her a fine writer of female erotic fiction.
The 1990 film, Henry and June was based on the diaries of Anais Nin; the film highlighted her free life of abandon and her affair with Henry Miller. Nin died in 1977 after a three-year struggle with cancer.
