Ali Smith is a 1962-born Scottish writer with a unique writing style that can be best described as impromptu. Born in a family of middle-class parents, Smith studied at University of Aberdeen, and then Cambridge. She fell ill while teaching as a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde. The turn of events led her to turn into writing as a full time career. Smith\'s flair is for the short story, though she has written novels too.
Her debut collection of short stories - Free Love and other short stories (1995) won the Saltire First Book of the Year award. gay and open about it, Smith lives with her partner at Cambridge.
