Alan Sharp was born in 1934 at Alyth in Scotland and raised in Greenock in Scotland. He left school at the age of fourteen and went to work at the dockyards. He went into military service and then got married. He settled down in London to write. His play, A Knight in Tarnished Armour was broadcast on British television in 1965. A Green Tree in Gedde was his first novel; it was the first one of a supposed trilogy. The second book was The Wind Shifts and the third book, The Apple Pickers was left halfway as he moved to Hollywood to write screenplays.
Sharp has a daughter, actress Rudi Davies with writer Beryl Bainbridge.
