Akha Bhagat (1591–1656) was a Gujarati poet in 17th century Ahmedabad who specialized in satire. His poetic pattern was called ‘Chappa’. Having migrated from Jetalpur to Ahmedabad, Akha’s residence in the latter city came to be known as ‘Akha no ordo’, the room of Akha.
What Akha wrote is considered to be part of the Bhakti movement of poets, in the lines of Mirabai. His poetry is deciphered as a merger of verse and philosophy. It is believed that Saint Gokulnath was a major influence in the Bhakti works of Akha. Akha’s famous poems include Akha na Chappa, Anubhav Bindu (Drop of Experience), Gurushishya Samvad (A Dialogue between Teacher and a Pupil), Panchikiran (Mixture of five elements) and Akhegita (Bhagavad Gita by Akho).
