Ahmad Faraz was born on January 12, 1931 in Kohat, North West Frontier, in British India(now in Pakistan). He was an Urdu poet who took Urdu ghazal and poetry to new heights. He is considered one of the greatest modern Urdu poets of the last century. Faraz had a articulate but simple style of writing. Ahmed Faraz studied Persian and Urdu at the Peshawar University. He was known for his mushairas and poetry. His poetry represented a genre of progressive writing with a vision. He has penned over a dozen volumes of contemporary Urdu poetry, in which he expressed love and revolutionary protests against capitalism and militarism. Mr. Faraz’s first volume of poetry, “Tanha Tanha,” was published in the late 1950s. Some of his work includes “Dekhtay Hain” (“Let Us Gaze”) and “Mohasara” (“The Siege”). In all, he had written 13 volumes of Urdu poetry.
