Sabri Brothers is a famous Qawwali performing group from Pakistan which started as a fourteen member team. Each of the group members bring in their special skill to the group. Ghulam Farid Sabri, Maqbool Sabri, Kamal Sabri and Mehmood Sabri give the vocals along with playing the harmonium, bongo drums and tambourine. The other members give supporting vocals, chorus, dholak and tabla sounds.
The Sabri Brothers were at the peak of their careers during the 70s and 80s. The brothers, who are claimed to be the descendents of the great Tansen, learned music from their father Ustad Inayat Sen Sabri. After shifting to India during partition in 1947, they further increased their knowledge and skill by receiving training from many Ustads. Their first recording, Mera Koi Nahin Hai came in 1958 on EMI Pakistan. In 1975 they performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall to a western audience for the first time. The concert tickets were sold-out. They are known for their sensitive and masterly performance of Qawwali which features hints of Sufism in it.
