Rashmi Agarwal a leading performer of Thumri-Dadra, Ghazal and Sufi-Bhakti Sangeet, received a solid grounding in music, learning her art as she did in the company of illustrious names. Having cut her teeth under the tutelage of Guru Kamala Bose, she decided to make music more than an academic pursuit. It was to be a lifelong love affair. Accordingly she pursued a master's degree in vocal music from Allahabad University under the able guidance of Pandit Ramashray Jha. Then she continued her exploration of Indian music with Guru Savita Devi, the renowned daughter of Guru Siddheshwari Devi of Benaras Gharana, by her side. Under her guidance she learnt and imbibed the stylistic techniques of Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri and Holi. At present she is mastering the nuances of Ghazal singing under the guidance of Padmashree Guru Shanti Hiranand, the foremost disciple of Begum Akhtar.
Rashmi is also an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations(ICCR) for performances abroad. A graded vocalist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Rashmi has performed for various Television channels. Some of her recent stage performances include Sri Harballabh Malhar Festival Jallandhar, Saptak Festival at Ahemdabad, ITPO New Delhi, a Sufi concert at Neemrana Fort, a Sufi Music workshop and performance at Mayo College Girls School Ajmer, Swami Haridas Festival at Vrindavan and Lucknow and HCL concert series at New Delhi. Recently, in April-May 2010, she enthralled her audience with her soulful and power packed performance in New York, Michigan, Louisville Kentucky, Connecticut, Delaware, Chicago in the USA. Her recent concerts at Nehru Centre London and Osho Shubham Centre London in July 2010 were much appreciated too.
The clarity in her diction and the deep tenor in her voice have enthralled many a listener across India and abroad. Connoisseurs and critics have lauded her various stage performances. Rashmi is equally at ease rendering Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, Hori, Bhajan, Ghazal, Folk and Sufiana kalams and her artistry of rendering is marked by spontaneity.
