A writer, director and producer combo with a plethora of genres coming from his studio, Ram Gopal Varma, also known as Ramu or RGV, likes to experiment without doubt. He has made everything from thrillers to gang wars, from corrupt politics to romantic musicals in Hindi and Telugu. After his engineering degree, Varma's first few attempts to enter films proved futile and he even made his mind to go to Nigeria to earn some money. But then he decided to open a video rental library of his own and his life changed. Ramu got a chance to work as an assistant director in the Telugu film industry for the films Raogaarillu and Collectorgari Abbai. His story telling skills impressed superstar Nagarjuna so much that he decided to work with RGV in 'Shiva'. RGV's dream of becoming a director thus came true. Ramu has experimented with almost every genre - from directing to Kaun, a suspense thriller to Mast - a subtle romantic musical. But no one comes close to him when it comes to direct underworld movies. Be it satya, the gangster on street movie or the underworld saga, Company - Ramu is a genius. His Amitabh-Abhishek starrer Sarkar and Sarkar Raj are not only box office successes but critically acclaimed work of art. His latest horror film, Phoonk surprised everybody and raked in money at the box office. Currently he is working on two projects titled Rann and Agyaat. RGV has won many awards and Academy Award nominated Slumdog Millionaire's director Danny Boyle says that his movies were the inspiration that led to Slumdog.
