Pandit Jeetendra Abhisheki was a famous Indian vocalist and performer of classical, semi-classical and devotional music. After reaching adolescence, he left his home to search for a mentor in Pune. His decision to search for a guru took him to Mumbai where he joined the All India Radio. This put him in contact with several musicians and also got him the opportunity to compose pieces for several radio programs.
He was trained in vocals by Pandit Purohit and Ustaad Azmat Hussain Khan of Agra gharana and Shri Gulubhai of Jaipur gharana. After this, he received scholarship from the Indian government for learning Indian Classical Music. He has composed background scores and vocals for more than 25 Marathi plays and received the coveted Homi Bhabha fellowship. He has also taught at Pandit Ravi Shankar’s music school in the USA. He has been awarded the Padma Sri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Balgangadharv Puraskar and Lata Mangeshkar Puraskar amongst many other awards. He passed away in 1998 leaving behind an illustrious musical legacy.
