Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Biography of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi : Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (also known as Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi) belongs to the Kirana Gharana and is one of the most renowned vocalists of Indian classical music. He is most famous for his interpretations of devotional Indian music and his Khayal form of singing. Bhimsen heard Abdul Karim Khan (one of the founders of Kirana Gharana) when he was only a child and was instantly inspired to become a musician. Bhimsen ran away from home at the age of 11 to find a master and learn music. After looking for a good master for 3 years he was finally tacked down by his father and brought back home. In 1936, Sawai Gandharva agreed to take him in as his apprentice. Along with training, Bhimsen took up odd jobs. In 1943, Bhimsen came to Mumbai and became a radio artist. He made his first live performance at the age of 19 and HMV released his first album at the age of 22. Over the years his music has been appreciated by the critics and masses alike. He was heavily inspired by fellow singers and after years of mixing and matching there styles, his own style of singing started to appear. He has also sung for films like Nodi Swami Navu Irrodhu Hege, Basant Bahar and Birbal My Brother. His most famous album till date is Dasavani. He received much applause for opening the music video of Mile Sur Mera Tumhara depicting India's National Integration. He conducts an annual music festival in memory of his guru. He is recipient of many honorary awards like the Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Sri and Platinum Disc Award. So far three books have been authored by various writers about Bhimsen Joshi namely Bhimsen Joshi: The man and his music, Bhimsen Joshi: A Biography and Bhimsen Joshi: A Passion for Music.
