Mithun Chakraborty was born as Gouranga Chokraborty to a poor family in Kolkata. He had to strive at lot to finish his studies and earn his degree in B. Sc. Not much interested in doing a regular job, Mithun started attending National Film and Television Institute in Pune where he learned many nuances of acting. Mrinal Sen got an idea of Mithun's talent and immediately offered him a National Award winning role in 'Mrigya'. Not much happened much for Mithun later and he had to satisfy himself doing meagre roles. In 1979, Mithun shot to fame with 'Suraksha' and 'Disco Dancer' established him as the dancing sensation of Bollywood, taking his popularity to heights. The success was followed by some of his most successful movies like 'Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki', 'Dance Dance', 'Pyaar Jhukta Nahin', 'Swarg Se Sunder' and 'Ghar Ek Mandir'. Other than Hindi films, Mithun did several regional films and is said to have worked in more than 200 Indian films. Mithun, affectionately called as Mithunda, also won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for 'Agneepath' and bagged the Filmfare Best Villain Award for his menacing performance in 'Jallad'. He also won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance as 'Shibnath', a freedom fighter in Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Tahader Katha and the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for 'Vivekananda'. His recent release include Ramesh Sippy's 'Chandi Chowk To China' with Akshay Kumar, Mani Ratnam's 'Guru' with Abhishek Bachchan and the comedy 'C Kkompany'.
