Writer, celebrated film-maker, widely read columnist and provocateur, Ruchir Joshi is also the editor of India’s first anthology of contemporary erotica, Electric Feather: The Tranquebar Book of Erotic Stories, published by Tranquebar Press/Westland. His debut novel, The Last Jet Engine Laugh, was welcomed and praised by the critics calling it the “essential literary debut” of 2001. Right now he is penning his second novel, set in Calcutta during the chaotic period of World War II.


While most people believe that Ruchir Joshi had an enviable job editing a book of erotic stories, he believes that it was not easy. This is because there isn’t much Indian work done in the past in the genre to refer and adhere to. He says he faced a “Wall of Rejections”, he got turned down a several times, tuned out and also “smiled” at while doing his job. However, the popularity the book garnered only goes on to say that Ruchir Joshi was indeed right to pick up this project.
